The surface under play equipment matters as much as the equipment itself. Shantana Softfall Mulch is a certified playground-grade pine bark, finely graded to around 15 mm, designed to cushion falls and even out uneven ground in children’s play areas.
It is a natural, non-toxic bark mulch with a soft fibrous texture and low dust. Use it under swings, slides and climbing frames at schools, childcare centres, parks, community playgrounds and backyard play spaces. Laid properly, it absorbs impact better than bare earth or ordinary garden mulch, drains well after rain, and is easier to top up and maintain than rubber or sand.
Because it is still a bark mulch, it can also sit around nearby plantings and help keep soil cooler and more even — but its primary job is playground surfacing, not garden decoration.
Installation depth is what makes it work. Loose-fill playground mulch needs to be deep enough for the fall height of the equipment, and it will settle and shift in high-traffic spots such as under swings. Check the required depth for your site before ordering; many playgrounds are specified at a generous install depth so the surface stays above the minimum after compaction. Keep the area edged so the mulch stays in the fall zone, rake high-use areas back into place, and top up as needed.
