Which sand should you choose
Sydney Sand and Coarse Washed Sand differ in texture and listed uses, while White and Yellow Brickies Sand are options for mortar work. Start with the job and any material specification from your installer, then compare the four sands below.
Shantana supplies these sands from our Springwood yard. You can browse the sand range or ask our team about your project.
Compare the four sands
| Sand | Texture and listed uses | What to check before ordering |
|---|---|---|
| Sydney Sand | Fine washed sand for tiling and exterior rendering. Also listed for placement around copper and electrical conduit, and sand pits. | Check the material required by your installer or project specification. |
| Coarse Washed Sand | Coarser than Sydney Sand, with listed uses including paving, soil mixing and suitable concrete preparation. | Confirm the required sand grade for your paving system or concrete mix. |
| White Brickies Sand | Fine, off-white bricklaying sand for mortar preparation. | Discuss the intended mortar colour with your bricklayer and inspect the current sand. |
| Yellow Brickies Sand | Fine, soft yellow bricklaying sand for brick and block mortar. | Check the specified mortar materials and compare a sample when matching existing work. |
Sydney Sand or Coarse Washed Sand
Sydney Sand is the finer of these two products. If your job involves tiling or exterior rendering, its product page is a useful starting point. Coarse Washed Sand has a coarser texture and is listed for paving work, mixing into soil and concrete preparation.
Tell us exactly what you are doing when enquiring. For paving, that includes whether you need material beneath the pavers or material for the joints. Have your installer's required grade ready so our team can check the product against the job.
If you are choosing the base for a path or paved area, our crusher dust and roadbase guide compares those base materials. For lawn work, read top dressing and turf underlay before selecting material for the lawn.
White or Yellow Brickies Sand
Both are bricklaying sands used in mortar preparation. White Brickies Sand has an off-white appearance; Yellow Brickies Sand is a fine, soft yellow sand listed for brick and block mortar.
The finished mortar colour depends on the sand, cement and mix. If you are matching an existing wall, discuss the match with your bricklayer and inspect the current sand before ordering. Choose the combination for the intended finish and specified mortar work.
Yellow Brickies Sand is also listed for bedding beneath above-ground pools. Check the pool manufacturer's or installer's material requirements for your particular system.
